Theresa Nist, winner of the inaugural season of "The Golden Bachelor," has expressed profound sorrow following her ex-husband Gerry Turner's recent cancer diagnosis. Turner, 72, revealed he has Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, a rare and slow-progressing bone marrow cancer. Nist, 71, learned of his condition during a visit to Indiana in March, shortly before their separation. Reflecting on the moment, she described the news as "devastating" and was "extremely upset."

Despite the diagnosis, Nist noted Turner's optimism, recalling he believed it was a type of cancer he would "most likely outlive." She expressed confidence in his resilience, stating, "He's a very positive person... I have every faith that... he'll live to be a very healthy old age."

Turner discovered his condition while seeking treatment for a shoulder injury, which led to the detection of unusual blood markers. This diagnosis prompted him to prioritize time with his family, a decision that influenced his relationship with Nist. He explained, "The importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority."

Nist, however, clarified that Turner's health was not a factor in their divorce, emphasizing that distance and other undisclosed issues played more significant roles. She affirmed her support for Turner, wishing him a "long and healthy, prosperous life" and expressing hope for his well-being.

Their brief marriage, which began with a televised wedding in January 2024, ended in divorce by April. Both have since spoken about the challenges of maintaining a relationship amidst personal trials and geographical separation. Turner is currently undergoing treatment with a hematology-oncology group in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and remains focused on his health and family.
